Workers at Chrysler-owner Stellantis are still in early voting but have so far largely backed the contract. GM's Spring Hill Assembly plant in Tennessee on Monday became the most recent major facility to vote against the contract, with 67.5% of UAW members rejecting it. Reasons behind the disapproval vary, according to industry experts and UAW members who spoke with CNBC. GM has had 52% of workers voting so far in support of ratification. He said these benefits remain a target for future bargaining when the tentative deals, if ratified, expire on April 30, 2028.

The percentage of Black workers in the auto industry today is more than double their share of the workforce overall. But the decline in US auto jobs and the erosion of unions have hit Black workers hardest. Black workers are likelier to belong to unions, in any industry, compared to White and Hispanic workers. Black union workers earn on average 16.4% higher wages than non-union Black workers, and they are likelier to have health care and retirement benefits, studies show. Hard-won gains disappearSoon after Black auto workers broke into better paying jobs, the US auto industry began its long decline, decimating Black communities in particular.

After 148 days of striking, TV and film writers reached a tentative agreement with studios and streamers regarding their work contracts. WGA members will vote on ratifying the agreement between Oct. 2 and 9, with some writers going back to work as early as next week. That could mean more early career writers get an opportunity to work and gain experience on the ground. Without an opportunity for syndication and international distribution on streaming services, residual pay for writers has been cut significantly as well. The contract also hikes minimum pay for various types of television shows and establishes minimum pay for late night talk shows on streaming services, like "The Amber Ruffin Show," which did not previously have established minimums.

Stellantis said the facility would "continue to be our North American headquarters and North America technical center." It's not guaranteed the facilities would close under a labor deal; however, Stellantis is required to include potential closures or sales of any location where a UAW member works, a company source said. Stellantis North American Chief Operating Officer Mark Stewart, who is overseeing the UAW talks, said the company needs to "modernize" the Mopar facilities. Stewart, without disclosing details of the plan, described the company's proposal for Belvidere as a "very compelling offer." The Mopar facilities that could close include Atlanta PDC; Boston PDC; Centerline Warehouse & Packaging; Chicago PDC; Marysville PDC; Milwaukee PDC; New York PDC; Orlando PDC; Sherwood PDC; and Warren PDC.

The standoff between the UAW and major automakers Stellantis, Ford and General Motors reached a fever pitch Friday, with the union starting work stoppages after an agreement wasn't met by a Thursday night deadline. UAW President Shawn Fain said earlier this week that Stellantis had previously offered a 17.5% increase. Under the new proposal, starting pay for supplemental employees would increase by $4.22, or nearly 27%, to $20 an hour. Stellantis leadership also pushed back against the union's descriptions of the automaker's plans to close or sell 18 facilities. The company has said it aims to run parts distribution centers more efficiently and continue shifting resources toward electric vehicles.
